Our projects

We develop tools that make production processes at Aurubis safer, more efficient, more sustainable, and add more value — to make the work of our colleagues easier! Some inspiring examples:

AI identification of low-performing tankhouse cells
AI identification of low-performing tankhouse cells

High-purity copper is produced via electrolytic refinement. For this, Aurubis operates several tankhouses, each much larger than a soccer field, containing more than 1,000 cells. It is a difficult challenge to monitor each of these and quickly identify cells running sub-optimally. We have built an AI that constantly monitors process parameters to enable optimal deployment of maintenance workers.

Copper ore is smelted and processed into pure copper in a multi-stage process at Aurubis’ primary smelter in Hamburg. To monitor the entire process, we worked with our colleagues on site to create a transparency dashboard that clearly shows the path the copper takes and the heartbeat of the plant. Data from various sources, such as sensors, material tracking, and lab systems, is periodically collected and processed in the background. The information displayed is important in helping our colleagues make informed decisions for optimizing operations and continuously improving the efficiency of copper production.

As a custom smelter, Aurubis treats a large variety of different raw materials. The smelting process has specifications with regards to environmental restrictions, product quality, and process stability. Together with our production colleagues, we developed BOSS (Blend Optimization Support System) to ensure an optimal mix of the different materials within all limitations. This tool helps users easily plan and book the feed mix for the coming days, incorporating financial considerations. This improves the efficiency and profitability of our smelters. Up to now, BOSS has been implemented in two of our smelters in Germany and Belgium, and we are already working on the rollout to additional sites.

The broad spectrum of production processes at Aurubis is exciting: We’re always getting to know new areas where we can apply our methods. I enjoy working with a wide array of experts at Aurubis, whose knowledge helps us develop models or conduct analyses. In Data Science & Artificial Intelligence, we tap into the large volumes of data that Aurubis collects. When the naked eye and Excel aren’t enough, we analyze sensor and lab data to uncover optimization potential using the tools of statistics, data visualization, and artificial intelligence. When AI learns the patterns in certain process data — for example when it learns to identify batches with lower process efficiency early on — we integrate this AI into operations.

As a modeling specialist at Aurubis, my workday is full of variety due to the diverse range of areas we develop models for. I particularly enjoy the close interactions with colleagues across all our sites, which allows me to collaborate with teams from different departments. Our work involves creating optimization tools that assist in logistics and production, and I often get to see the production processes and the real-time use of our tools live. This hands-on experience and broad interaction make my role at Aurubis truly unique.

As a member of the Data Engineering Team at Aurubis, I contribute to the development and maintenance of our data platform, which forms the basis for many of our data-driven applications. I work closely with my colleagues from the Data Science and Modeling teams, making my daily work particularly interesting and varied. My role involves developing and automating ETL pipelines to efficiently manage the collection, transformation and loading of data. I also advise colleagues on programming, visualization and data architecture. What excites me most about my Data Engineering role is working with metals — tangible products that are essential for future challenges such as digitalization and the energy transition. Our complex facilities and processes mean that every day brings new challenges and learning opportunities. I particularly enjoy working with a wide range of people from different backgrounds, which keeps my work dynamic and fulfilling.
